Featuring dark blue, balloon-like buds that open into 3″-diameter, violet-blue flowers with extra thick petals that extend the duration of the blooms, compact Platycodon grandiflorus ‘Astra Blue’ makes an enchanting addition to garden beds and container plantings. The neatly mounding, sturdy, well-branched plants have finely textured foliage that remains dark green throughout the heat of summer. One of the Astra series of Balloon Flowers.

Native to meadows and hillsides in China, Japan, Korea and Siberia. Hardy to Zone 3, this perennial likes well-drained soil rich in organic material, but won’t thrive in wet soil.
